Yoda Press wins Publishing Next's Publisher of the Year award
This is a triumph for small, independent presses.
Yoda Press, the independent publishing house run by Arpita Das, has been named Publisher of the Year by the Publishing Next Industry Awards 2016.
Yoda Press was established in 2004, and runs its operations in New Delhi. Das, obviously, was delighted.
Pratham Books, the children’s book publisher, was named the runner-up in this category.
The Publishing Next awards were instituted in 2014. This year, the awards were presented at the Publishing Next conference held in Kochi, Kerala.
Walking Bookfairs, a travelling bookstore that has reached twenty states and thousands of people who would otherwise have limited access to books, won the Bookstore of the Year award. The Full Circle Bookstore in Greater Kailash, New Delhi, is the runner-up.
Awards were also given for the Printed Book of the Year (Narratives for Indian Modernity: The Aesthetic of Brij Mohan Anand, published by Harper Collins), Printed Children’s Book of the Year (Book of Beasts: An A to Z Rhyming Bestiary, published by Duckbill Books), Digital Book of the Year (Jadav and the Tree-Place, Pratham Books), Book Cover of the Year (Kalkatta, designed by Pinaki De), and Printed Book (Indian Languages) of the Year (Hoshiarpur Aur Anya Kavitayein, Copper Coin Publishing).
