For someone who loves reading, it’s an irresistible proposition. Read through submissions to the fiction section of Guernica, the online “magazine of art and politics”, pick what you like, and recommend it for publication.

And, while you’re at it, correspond with the authors.

Sure, there’s a catch. It’s not a paid position – Guernica is run entirely by volunteers. (That’s what the world of art and literature has come to, with not enough money to go around, but let’s save that rant for another time.) And it’s only for six months.

Still, reading between 10 and 20 submissions every week during that period will be a great way of becoming familiar with what’s being written right now, and knowing how to tell the good apart from the mediocre.

If you’re planning to be a writer, or get into publishing, this stint will look good on your CV. Count on it.
